When a baby passed away in my community, the parents started an initiative to teach as many people CPR as possible. As a CPR instructor, I had the privilege to assist with these classes.
Do you own a CPR manikin? Well, neither do most. I was fortunate to join a research project to determine the effectiveness of CPR training using a pillow. Having the opportunity to attend an international conference and present our research poster was truly amazing and awarding. While at the conference, I learned about diabetes and its effects on the heart.
During my time at Morgan State University, I was involved in the journal club and Eat Right Club. At the monthly journal club, we discussed different topics on nutrition such as eating patterns for athletes as well as micronutrients and brain development. I presented “feeding methods for nursing mothers”. At the Eat Right Club, I organized and packaged food for school children.
Addressing food insecurity has been a lifelong passion of mine. Whether it be packaging food at a food bank, delivering food packages to the needy and elderly, or helping organize the warehouse, it has always been a humbling experience that I am proud to make a part of my life.
Kids of Courage provides programs for those with special needs throughout the year. Some of the activities that I joined my camper with were summer trips to Vegas, D.C., and Arizona. During the winter, I had a great time skiing with my camper. I also organized a holiday party for campers in my region.
While studying abroad in Israel, I had the opportunity to volunteer to stay nights in a children’s hospital, giving parents much needed respite. This experience taught me how to brighten a sad situation.
Hatzalah of Baltimore is a volunteer emergency medical services organization within the Baltimore community. One of their fundraisers is an annual carnival. Each year I had fun volunteering in different booths such as face painting, cotton candy, and arts and crafts.
Nutrition education is important at a young age. It was a great experience to teach preschool children the importance of a well-balanced diet. We played with MyPlate activities and also decorated rice cakes to look like smiley faces all while learning about the nutritional values of vegetables and grains.
